Morris Avenue shoot with Marley and Avery

Marley and Avery on Morris Avenue – Images by Christine Prichard

Marley, Avery, and I spent about an hour today on Morris Avenue and shot some photos. We had intended to go to Sloss Furnaces to shoot, but discovered at the gate that Sloss is closed on Mondays. After a few tears on Avery’s part, I vetoed Marley’s idea to go to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and headed downtown.

We had a lot of fun and in the process, I discovered that Marley makes a marvelous assistant–she did a wonderful job holding the reflector when her brother was being photographed–hence he had much better lighting than she did. But I think they both did a great job in front of the camera.

It is always hard to get everyone ready AND be the photographer, so of course we didn’t hit Morris until high noon. I generally avoid shooting at this time of day because the quality of light is so harsh. Luckily for me, it is winter, so the sun is relatively low in the sky. And I can’t tell you the number of newspaper assignments I’ve shot in horrible lighting conditions–so although our timing wasn’t ideal, I can deal with it. So we stuck to the shadows and used fill flash and reflectors to tone things down a bit.

We did all right, I think. Usually on a shoot like this I’d have an assistant. Marley is definitely learning the ropes on both sides of the camera, thank goodness.

Both she and Avery say they want to be photographers when they grow up. That’s a good sign that they’re having fun with this. So am I.

  1. Thank you–that is the benefit of working on my side of the camera; pretty soon I think her hands will be able to handle the big camera–its a bit much for her now.
